I should like to define, if I can, what that means. Eranos is just a name for an archetypal urge in these times, to put through something spiritual and psychological, which is of the highest importance to mankind. That urge or pressure from within takes the way of least resistance. It gripe that person or persons, whose psychic organism makes them fitted for the job. In this case it took hold of me. There was no question of choice. And in many cases, for the speakers, there is also no choice. We have a task. Why, do you imagine, did Jung speak here for 15 years running ? Or Buonaiuti, or Kerényi or others, who have spoken here so often? All the lectures given here seem to move around a centre, not represented by any personality, but by an idea, which we call Eranos. It stands for the Quest, or for the Self as defined by Jung, or the Way of the Soul. - It has any number of names, but au fond it escapes definition being a paradox and irrational thing.
